They’re available to individuals, schools and colleges in more than 60 countries.
Graded Examinations in Spoken English (GESE)
Trinity’s GESE exams test the English speaking and listening skills of people whose first language is not English. They focus on building motivation and confidence in using English and enable students to chart their progress from beginner to proficiency. GESE exams are approved for UK visa or settlement purposes.
Features
GESE exams are designed to complement general English language courses, and focus on building confidence and motivation in English language communication.
The exams take the form of an unscripted conversation with a Trinity examiner, which covers a range of topics and tasks. They are open to anyone aged 5 or older and are designed to be inclusive and relevant to every learner.
The GESE Exam information booklet (PDF, 799KB) sets out the content and format of the exams, and contains guidance notes for teachers and the exam rules and regulations.
Progression
As they move up the grades, candidates undertake tasks that require a more advanced use of language. At higher grades, they are expected to take more responsibility for developing and directing the conversation, rather than simply responding to a series of questions.
Recognition
GESE is accredited by Ofqual*, the exam regulator.
All GESE grades hold the ALTE Q-mark and have been calibrated to the Common European Framework of Reference (PDF, 401KB).
* except Grade 1

Integrated Skills in English (ISE)
Trinity's ISE exams assess all four language skills – Speaking, Writing, Listening and Reading – interacting with each other as they do in the real world. An ISE exam forms a natural part of any course of English language study, undertaken in a group or individually.
The ISE Exam Information booklet (PDF, 993KB) sets out the content and format of the exams, and contains guidance notes for teachers and the exam rules and regulations.
The exam structure
The exams include a portfolio element as well as tasks carried out under exam conditions. This ensures that wide and varied sample of learner work is taken fully into account.
Preparation for the exam supports the programme of work chosen by the teacher and learner, rather than interfering with it.
ISE exam contains three components:
-
Portfolio Tasks
- Controlled Written Exam
- Spoken Interview

Spoken English for Work (SEW)
The Spoken English for Work (SEW) exam is a unique assessment of spoken English communication in a work context. Through a series of interactive tasks, SEW tests assess a full range of practical speaking and listening skills that are required in the world of work on a day-to-day basis.
SEW prepares candidates for real-life working situations by providing valuable practice and assessment in telephone conversations, formal and informal presentations - along with the opportunity to discuss real work issues in an English-speaking context.
The four levels of SEW provide a measure of linguistic competence from intermediate to advanced levels, B1 to C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (2001).
At each proficiency level the exam contains 3 types of tasks:
